Maya Wouters used Craigslist to sell her car when she moved from Atlanta to New York City last year. When she got to New York, she used Craigslist to furnish her new apartment. It worked out so well that she then used it to find a roommate, sigh up for a book club, and find a good place to walk her dog. Six months after she movd to New York, she met her finacé through a personal and posted on Craigslist. Craigslist is a wildly successful Internet bulletin board where people can post and respond to ads to sll their possessions, look for dates, express political views, seek advice, and find an apartment or even an activity partner. It was founded by Craig Newmark, a computer programmer who saw a need for a Web site where people could easily find the things they needed. It all started with a simple e-mail list that Newmark sent to his friends about events happening in his hometown of San Francisco. Word spread quickly, and as more  people asked to be added to the list, it soon became too large for e-mail. So Newmark wrote software that could automatically add e-mail posting to a Web Site. Today, Craigslist has more than 10 million users and more than 2.5 billion page views per month. It serves 34 countries on 5 continents with more than 170 individual city sites. Amazingly, Craigslist remains a very small operation, employing only 18 people in a small office in its birthplace of San Francisco.
